Last week, the healthcare market converged on McCormick Place in Chicago for ATA 2018 – the American Telemedicine Association’s annual conference and expo – to discuss, show, and learn about the latest technologies and trends in the growing telehealth space. If you didn’t have a chance to make it to the Windy City, our team was on hand at the heart of it all. As expected, there was plenty of discussion around general topics, including how to add telehealth services to your practice, cost analyses of telehealth compared to traditional care, and legal and regulatory discussions.

We also noticed several other key trends at this year’s show that are driving the growth of telehealth.

The breadth of Telehealth applications is expanding

Telehealth applications are expanding into nearly every segment of healthcare. From general practices to specialty services, providers are enhancing their patient care through telehealth services.  The breadth of applications, from pediatric care and neonatology to radiology and psychiatry, and even to pharmacies, shows the value of telehealth across the board in delivering a positive patient experience. There was even discussion of telehealth applications in helping address the growing opioid epidemic.

Remote patient monitoring is on the rise

Not surprisingly, remote patient monitoring was a hot topic.  It’s one of the fastest growing segments in healthcare and is becoming a priority for practices, who are learning from some of the largest healthcare networks that are using it to help reduce clinic, office, and emergency room visits (and costs), without sacrificing care. In fact, most patients find they have easier access to better care in a more comfortable environment. With the benefits to both practitioners and patients, along with continued innovation in technology, it’s no surprise the RPM market is projected to grow at a 16% CAGR through 2022.

Emerging tech trends continue to drive innovation in healthcare

A number of new trends in technology are behind many new developments in healthcare that will create even better healthcare delivery systems. Artificial intelligence, machine learning, collaboration and analytics are all being used to develop more accurate and more efficient diagnoses and procedures, including preventative care capabilities. Blockchain technology, the driving force being the cryptocurrency trend, will eventually create more efficient, accurate, and transparent recordkeeping systems, including the ability to integrate with data sources to drive more proactive care. Wearable tech started out with the Fitbit fad, but has evolved into a key component in patient monitoring and care.
